How can I spend my HSA funds?

You can spend your HSA money on a wide variety of IRS-qualified medical expenses for yourself, your spouse, and your eligible dependents.

Here’s a breakdown of common categories and examples:

1. Routine Medical Expenses

  • Deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance for doctor’s visits, specialists, and hospital stays.
  • Prescription drugs.
  • Over-the-counter medications and products, like pain relievers, allergy medications, and first-aid supplies (including items like bandages, contact lens solution, and sunscreen purchased to treat or alleviate a medical condition).
  • Annual physical exams.
  • Chiropractic care and acupuncture.

2. Dental care

  • Cleanings, X-rays, fillings, and extractions.
  • Braces, dentures, and dental implants.
  • Dental surgeries and other procedures.

3. Vision care

  • Eye exams.
  • Prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Corrective eye surgery, such as LASIK.

4. Other notable expenses

  • Menstrual care products: Tampons, pads, menstrual cups, etc.
  • COVID-19 related expenses: Testing, treatment, and certain PPE like masks and hand sanitizer.
  • Mental health services: Counseling, therapy, and psychiatric care.
  • Transportation for medical care: This includes gas, tolls, parking, and even plane tickets if traveling for healthcare.
  • Some insurance premiums: Limited instances, such as COBRA premiums or premiums during a period of unemployment compensation.

IRS Publication 502 should always be consulted for the up-to-date list on what is considered eligible. That list can be found here.
