Dental Insurance FAQs

Q: How do I know if my dentist is in network?

A: There are two ways.  The first is use the provider search tool available here for Cigna plans and here for Ameritas plans.  The second way is to call your dentist directly and ask.

Q: When does my coverage start?  How soon can I use my benefits?

A: You can start using your benefits as soon as the day after you enroll depending on how you pay for your plan.  Preventive care benefits are paid at 100% for all plans from the first day, but other benefits are tiered and how much of a benefit you receive is based on how long you have had the plan.

It is best to refer to your specific plan for details.

Q: Can I cancel at any time?

A: Yes.  You can elect to cancel your plan at any time for no cost.  Coverage will typically end at the end of the next premium cycle.

When you do cancel your dental insurance, most companies require you to wait 12 consecutive months before you can enroll in coverage again.

Q: Do dental plan have limitations or exclusions?

A: Yes. Plans have restrictions set on how many services you can receive in a year and over a lifetime in some cases.  It is best to refer to your specific plan for details.

Q: Does my whole family need to use the same dentist?

A: Nope.  You can each have your own dentist.  Just make sure that each dentist is in the network so you can receive the best coverage.

Q: Does dental insurance work with Medicare?

A: Yes.  You can have Medicare and still enroll in and use a dental insurance plan.

Q: Will my premium amount change?

A: Dental premiums can change, but it is rare.  If they do change, you will be given a 60 day notice letting you know of the upcoming changes.

Q: Are there any other fees that I have to pay?

A: No.  There are no enrollment or sign up fees, no cancelation fees, no administrative fees- what you see is what you’re going to pay.  Just make sure to stay in-network to receive the maximum benefit.
