When will I be kicked off of my parents insurance plan?

Generally, this happens when you turn 26- but there is a significant factor that determines exactly when this occurs.

If your parents have a plan through their work or other group plan..

You will typically be removed from that plan on the last day of your birth month. For example, if you turn 26 on March 3, your last day insured will be March 31.

However, the exact date is determined by the insurance company. Call them to confirm. Your carrier may extend coverage through the end of the year or they may terminate coverage the day you turn 26.

If your parents have a plan through the Marketplace..

You will be removed on December 31st of the year you turned 26. For example, if you turn 26 on March 3, your last day insured will be December 31 of that year.

If your parents have COBRA coverage..

This is the same as group coverage. Depending in the carrier, your coverage may end on your birthday or through the end of the year. Call your provider to confirm when your termination date is.

What if I get married or move away from home?

This does not matter or effect the date at which you are removed. You can be married and still on your parent’s health insurance (you spouse most likely can not be though).

You can live in another state and still be covered under your parent’s health plan. If this is the case, just make sure that their plan covers your area in the network, otherwise you may end up paying for out-of-network cost when you seek care.

Either way, you are eligible for coverage under a parent’s insurance through age 26, regardless of the other factors.
