I have a HMO plan. Can I go to an emergency room out of network?

Only in true emergencies.

Generally, HMO plans do not cover out-of-network emergency room care, but there are exceptions for true emergencies. In most cases, you’ll need to use in-network providers for all your healthcare, including emergency room visits.

However, if you experience a medical emergency and need immediate care, most HMO plans will cover the cost of treatment at the closest hospital, even if it’s out-of-network.

If you require further treatment after being stabilized in the emergency room, you may need to be transferred to an in-network facility.

It’s always a good idea to contact your HMO as soon as possible after seeking out-of-network emergency care to inform them of the situation.
