It’s easy if you receive Social Security retirement benefits: The Social Security Administration will automatically enroll you in Medicare when you turn 65. You will receive your Medicare cards in the mail approximately 3 months before your 65th birthday.
If you are under 65 and get disability benefits, the Social Security Administration will enroll you in Medicare after you have received benefits for 24 months.
If you are not automatically enrolled, you have three primary methods to apply for Medicare.
- Online application: Applying online throught the Social Security Administration website is general the fastest and most convenient method. THe process typically takes between 10 and 30 minutes to complete.
- By phone: You can apply by calling the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. Representatives are availible weekdays between 8am and 7pm local time. For quicker service, it is best to call early in the day and later in the week.
- In person: You can apply in person by visiting your local Social Security Administration office. This option may be preferable for those who need personalized assistance with their applicaiton.
