What is an EPO?

An EPO stands for Exclusive Provider Organization. It’s a type of managed care plan where you’re typically limited to using doctors, specialists, and hospitals within the plan’s network for coverage, except in emergencies.

Unlike some HMOs, EPOs often allow you to see specialists without a referral from a primary care physician, as long as they are in the network.

EPOs are often more affordable than PPOs, but they offer less flexibility in choosing providers.

If you seek care outside the EPO’s network, you will likely be responsible for the full cost of those services, with no reimbursement from the plan, except in emergencies.
